Thomas Godwin

Biography

Thomas Godwin is a Professor of Practice in the Accounting Area of the Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management within the SC Johnson College of Business at Cornell University. Professor Godwin came to Cornell from Purdue University, where he was an assistant professor of accounting. He earned his Ph.D. in accounting from Purdue University, and Professor Godwin received master’s and bachelor’s degrees in accounting from Clemson University. He is a licensed CPA in New York and South Carolina and holds a CGMA designation through the AICPA.

Prior to his time in academia, Professor Godwin worked extensively in tax consulting and compliance for a national public accounting firm, primarily serving private equity firms. He has continued this work as a tax consultant and as an editor for the largest CPA review publisher nationally. His work has been published in Tax Notes, The Journal of Accountancy, and The Tax Adviser. At Cornell, Professor Godwin teaches financial accounting, tax, and fraud courses for both undergraduate and graduate students. He is a co-director of Cornell LITLAP, with a specific focus on free tax compliance services for low-income taxpayers in the Tompkins County, New York area. Professor Godwin has won numerous awards for his research, teaching, and community engagement, including college, university, and national awards.
