Dyson Office of Student Services and Advising

Cultivating connections between coursework, career, and community.

Your experience at the Charles H. Dyson School for Applied Economics and Management goes beyond academics. While you’re here, you will also build meaningful connections and begin to develop your professional network—and intentional, personalized advising is a big part of that process.

Advising at Dyson: Preparing You for Academic and Professional Success

At the Dyson School, strong academic advising is a key factor in student success—and in our enduring relationship with our alumni network. During your time at Cornell, you’ll work closely with faculty mentors and the Dyson Office of Student Services and Advising staff members to build an academic plan—and see it through.

Your Academic Advisor: Helping You Plot Your Course

When it comes down to it, each student is responsible for their own decisions. At Dyson, however, you’ll have a team of student services professionals to guide you along the way.

Your academic advisor will help you with short- and long-term course planning, including when and how to work in experiential learning opportunities like study abroad or summer research programs. Academic advisors can also connect you to broader campus support services, everything from learning strategies to wellness. Once matriculated, students can make appointments with Dyson academic advisors through Launchpad.

How to Connect with Your Academic Advisor

Dyson students have two main options for connecting with their academic advisor: drop-in visits or scheduled appointments. Here’s an overview to help you figure out which type best suits your current needs.

Step One: Determine Your Needs

Quick questions = drop-in visit

If you have a quick question or two, a drop-in visit to the Dyson Office of Student Services and Advising team may be best for you. These typically last 5–10 minutes.

Longer conversations = appointments

If you would like to talk about your academic progress, discuss course planning, or share personal concerns, a scheduled appointment with your academic advisor is the best option.

Step Two: Plan Your Visit

Just need to drop in?

Find current drop-in office hours, including virtual availability, at the Dyson Launchpad (under “connect with an academic advisor”).

Need more dedicated time?

Find the advisor who corresponds with your last name, and schedule an appointment through Dyson Launchpad.

Where to find us: The Office of Student Services and Advising is Warren Hall B34.

Find Your Place Faster By Attending Orientation

Cornell Orientation is a great way for new students to meet other students and learn about the university and college. In partnership with the university-wide orientation, the Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management hosts multiple sessions for students to learn about our school, meet faculty and staff, and develop an understanding of the array of support resources available. New Dyson students will receive an email from the Dyson Office of Student Services and Advising outlining the Discover Dyson Summer Virtual Series in early June. Contact the Dyson Office of Student Services and Advising if you have questions.

Dyson Scholars Program: Academic and Financial Support

At Dyson, scholarship is rewarded and recognized in many ways, including the Dyson Scholars Program. A new group of scholars is named each year, representing about the top 10 percent of each class. This academically distinguished group receives benefits such as financial support and exclusive access to academic experiences.

Here are more details about this prestigious program.

Faculty Mentors at Dyson: Aligning Coursework and Career Goals

Dyson’s distinguished faculty members are subject matter experts in their fields. They share their industry knowledge and first-hand experience with you in the classroom as teachers. But as faculty mentors, they also share wisdom with students one-on-one. Faculty can help you choose concentrations and courses, guide you on internships and other experiential learning opportunities, and provide informed advice on graduate school and career options.

You could also say that faculty is an extension of Dyson Career Management Center; if you build meaningful relationships with your academic mentors, they may be willing to also write a letter of recommendation for graduate school or serve as a reference on employment applications. Students should contact faculty directly to make an appointment or discover their office hours.
